Star Anise is whole, and sold by the ounce.
Star Anise is an evergreen tree that has an eight pointed, star shaped woody fruit with a single seed in each segment. It originated in Vietnam and China, it is now produced almost exclusively in China.
This Star Anise is not to be confused with the Japanese Star Anise relative which is often used to make incense. Our Star Anise is imported from China, so feel comfortable in your selection and use.
The plant puts out a small star-shaped fruit with eight points, and a seed is contained in each of the points.
Star Anise can be used whole as a flavoring, its seeds can be used as a flavoring, and both are ground. It has been used in Asia to flavor pork and chicken, in teas, and as a seasoning, and, with the advent of fusion cuisine, has spread around the globe.
Chinese Star Anise (or simply Star Anise), has long been held in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a potent aid in soothing and curing long-lingering colds, as well for its use in soothing flatulence, helping with digestion, and aiding with illness associated with the urinary track, such as kidney stones. To this end, the fruit was sometimes chewed after dinner in china both as an aid for bad breath as well as to aid in digestion as described above.
Many people like to carry a star anise pod in a conjure bag to ward off the evil eye. We are also told that star anise is used to bring good luck in love, money, and health matters through powerful visions.
People experienced at games of chance tell us that if they dream lucky, they will have good luck the next day. People in love claim that a psychic dream can lead to a lifetime of happiness. Others diagnose healing through dreams. Therefore, folks place a dish of star anise on their altar and burn star anise mixed with psychic vision incense to see winning numbers or their future mate, or to foretell the future.
