Medicinal Usage:
Nettle used internally for anemia since the high vitamin C content ensures that iron is properly absorbed by the body.
Also used to increase milk flow in nursing mothers. Used for stimulating the circulation.
The fresh shoots make a great spring tonic.
Tinctures are used for arthritis, skin problems, and heavy uterine bleeding.
Compresses can be applied to painful arthritic joints, gout, neuralgia, sprains, tendonitis, and sciatica.
Ointments are used for hemorrhoids. Washes are applied to burns, insect bites, and wounds.
Culinary Usage:
Young Nettle leaves are cooked like spinach, made into soup, and are added to meat, egg, and vegetable dishes.
Cosmetic Usage:
The root is made into a hair rinse for dandruff, thinning hair, and a general conditioner.
Usage Example:
Nettle Hair Rinse
Steep 1 tsp of dried nettle leaves in 1 cup boiling water for 20 minutes.
Strain, then bring the tea back to a boil and another teaspoon of nettle to this mixture.
Allow this to steep until it is cool enough to apply to your hair, then strain again. Pour this over your hair after you shampoo.
This is a leave in hair rinse.
