What are Capiz shells?
Capiz shells are actually the outer shell of a marine mollusk, whose scientific name is placuna placenta, more commonly called "windowpane oyster", which is found only in the shallow coastal waters of the Philippine and Indonesian island chains. Philippine Capiz shells are so named because they were originally harvested near the town of Capiz, on the island of Panay.
Where does the term "windowpane oyster" come from?
In Philippine colonial days, Capiz shells were used in making windows, because they're translucent enough to allow considerable daylight to pass through. These windows, which can still be seen in older houses throughout the Philippines, were made of small square shells, held together by thin strips of wood, designed to slide open and closed.
How are Capiz shell tealight holders and other products made?
Entirely by hand. The shells are cleaned and then cut to desired size and shape using a pattern similar to a cookie cutter. They're then painted and assembled using thin strips of brass or tin which enable the shells to be joined by soldering. Alternatively, the product may be fully assembled before painting.
Are Capiz shell tealight holders dangerous?
No, the shells are flame resistant. If an open flame is applied, the paint will melt and discolor the shell but it will not catch fire.
Capiz shells are a gift from the sea. They were used at one time in the Philippines as windowpanes. The shells are knows for their beautiful coloration when illuminated, either by candles, sunlight, or other lighting. While the shells may look fragile, they are really quite durable and long lasting.
