Cloves are whole, and sold by the ounce.

Cloves are a small, bushy evergreen tree that has shiny, oval, leathery, aromatic leaves which are pink when young. Pink white flowers are produced in late summer followed by aromatic purple berries. Cloves are the dried flower buds.

Cloves relieve pain and are often used in toothache remedies. It also helps control nausea and vomiting. It is prescribed to help improve digestion and protects against intestinal parasites. It also causes uterine contractions so don't use while pregnant.

Cloves are used widely in flavoring ham, mulled winter drinks, pickles, cakes, mincemeat, and preserves.

Try a clove studded onion in a stew. Whole cloves are often added to mulled cider or wine, and hot teas. Traditional hams may be studded with whole cloves. Cloves are mainly used in sweets, cakes, stewed fruits and preserves, in sauces, and in cooking pork where the cloves are inserted into the meat.
